Book one in the Duke's Sons series. Nathaniel is the oldest son of a Duke which makes him the heir so he picks a proper English wife to wed. The wedding starts off the book, but what Nathaniel doesn't know is that his new bride, Violet, has waited her whole life to get married so she could be free from her controlling oppressive Grandmother. She starts with her staff, then her wardrobe, and finally what she chooses to go out and do. This shocks Nathaniel who would have sworn that he married a quite, polite, almost blend into the background wife. These changes all take some adjusting to for both the couple and her controlling family. Of course this all leads to quite a bit of drama though it all works out in the end just like a romance novel should. Ashford does a good job of keeping the writing historically accurate and the development is smooth. I enjoyed how this book followed a slightly different time line than a lot of the romances that I read. the hidden family secret was a pleasant surprise which added a new dimension to the story, and I admit to being impressed with how unsnobby the Duke's kids really are (which to be honest most of them should have been but we have all heard the stories of how awful some of those society people could be). I recommend this book to fans of historical romances that do not follow the set formula a lot of authors do. I really enjoyed it so it gets 4/5 stars.
