My Top 5 Favorite Paranormal Creatures
By Christina Bauer, Author
I’ve been asked by the lovely folks at Books a Plenty
Reviews to share my top 5 favorite paranormal creatures…And to celebrate the
launch of my new book CRADLED
(Beholder Series Book 5), I’ve decided to focus said list on childhood- and
offspring-related monsters. Here goes!
ONE. GRENDEL
Grendel is the big bad monster of Beowulf, a Nordic saga
where there’s a shitton of mead and smiting. What I like about Grendel is that
although he’s definitely a big bad monster, the REALLY BIG big bad is none
other than Grendel’s mother. I’d like to read a reimagining of that story where
Grendel’s mother kicks Beowulf’s ass, but I’m a romantic like that.
TWO. THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN
This one is a personal childhood memory for me. I was
freaking terrified of the headless horseman as a kid. I was convinced that he’d
chop off my head at night when I slept unless I had my hair in curlers, because
no self-respecting headless horseman wanted a head full of curlers. Therefore,
the headless horseman was responsible for a lot of odd-looking hairdos in my
youth.
THREE. JENNY GREENTEETH
No one can scare the ever-loving crap out of me better than
a good Irish evil fairy story. Jenny Greenteeth is a dark fae who lurks by the
edges of ponds and pulls kids in to their deaths. I first read about her when I
was thirteen and have been avoiding ponds ever since.
FOUR. STUPID PETER
If the Irish are great for sheer fright, the Germans are
proficient in a good mind fuck, there’s a series of children’s stories called
Stupid Peter in which said boy doesn’t eat his dinner and so he dies of
starvation, doesn’t clip his nails so he turns into a wild man, and so on.
FIVE. KRAMPUS
And what list of childhood-related paranormal nonsense would
be complete without KRAMPUS, the evil version of Santa who takes kids away in
sacks because, again, this is a Germanic story and Santa Claus kidnapping you
is the ultimate mind fuck.
So there you have it. Childhood paranormal nightmares
galore. I suppose I could have done a list of happy paranormal childhood
things, but then again, I am the author of the Beholder Series, after all. My
happy endings always arrive after a little bit of darkness.
Author Bio:
Christina Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too.
Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.
