Tied Up with Strings
(A Serebral Seniors Mystery)
by Madeline McEwen
Character Interview – Betty Grape
- 1) Tell us a little bit about yourself--both something we learn from [the story] and something that readers might not guess?I feign more confidence that I have. Widows and widowers are everywhere—I live at the Serebral Senior Home—but I am still lonely without my husband. I expect we all are, but people avoid talking about the ones they have loved and lost.2) How did you first meet your writer? She was visiting a friend of mine because she volunteered at the Caregiving Alliance—a sitter service for carers so they can take a few hours off from their responsibilities. That was before she got her Green Card and had all those children. She still visits, but she doesn’t have enough time for me these days.3) Want to dish about him/her?Absolutely! What an opportunity. She needs to get out and about more instead of sitting at that computer tapping out those stories. Maybe you haven’t heard, but she broke her finger—her pinky—but she’s milked that minor injury to avoid a whole host of responsibilities. Got to admire her ingenuity.4) Why do you think that your life has ended up being in a book?Because her existence is so dull by comparison. Between you and me, I think she’d like to trade lives.5) Who's your favorite character? Why?I’m torn between Pete Palmer and Hugo--my partners in the investigation business--whom I left behind in the States when I visited the UK, and the lovely Catia. Now she’s a complicated customer, but I like spending time with youngsters because they refresh one’s outlook on life and keep me on my toes.6) Who's your least favorite character? Why?Mr. Braithwaite, but I avoided the misfortune of meeting him in person.7) What's next for you?Back to the States for me. Travel does broaden the mind, but my stomach can’t cope with black pudding. Although, I’ve developed two addictions—their cookies—awesome, and Prawn Cocktail chips or crisps as those Brits call them.
