Character Guest Post by Pat Pirard
You never know when life is going to turn upside
down, do you?
My name is
Pat Pirard, the woman who had everything figured out. I was about to turn thirty-five
and leading a perfect life. Okay, a few months ago my long term boyfriend
dumped me, but I was over that. I was broke, but my dream car, a sunburst
yellow Mercedes convertible, was parked in my garage so my self-imposed poverty
was worth it. I had the best job in the world, Santa Cruz County Law Librarian,
where I met fascinating members of the legal community and helped them with
complex research that challenged my mind and kept me entertained. But in the
space of one day―one day―I was downsized out of my job and in danger of having
to become a couch surfer with my dog and cat in tow.
My best friend, Syda Gonzales, decided I needed a
distraction before I got down to the serious job of figuring out how to regain
control of my life so she enrolled us in a glass forming class. She’s an
aspiring artist who hasn’t found her muse yet and she thought glass artistry
just might be it. She had fantasies of us creating together and becoming a
famous team…she has lots of fantasies. We never found out if she was right,
though, because as he was giving his final day of lectures, our instructor was
murdered in front of the entire class.
That’s when my life took another flip. A highly
eligible and handsome attorney with pre-mature salt-and -pepper hair that…
Where did I leave my fan? I get pink cheeks just thinking about him. Well, he
hired me to help him mount a defense for his client who was charged with the
murder. So now I’m the CEO of my own company, PIP Inc., and am going to work as
a private investigator. How the murder worked had everyone stumped for a while,
but I’m off to a rousing start: I figured out how it was done! That must mean
that no one needs to know I don’t have a PI license. I have business cards
introducing me a Private Investigator Pat. Surely that counts for something.
