Meet Evelyn Havers
by Marilyn Levinson
Mystery
book reviewers will tell you that I'm the ghost that haunts the Clover Ridge
Library in Allison Brook's Haunted Library mystery series. Well, it's true that
I died and left this earthly plane after I fell one icy night in the library's
parking lot, but haunting is a bit harsh to describe what I do. I mean, I don't
go around in chains making weird sounds and frightening the patrons. Rather,
I'm a well-bred woman in my mid-sixties (one good thing about my condition is
that I never age) and I often visit the library where I worked as a library
aide.
I
noticed a young woman working in the library. Carrie Singleton was in her late
twenties and very pretty—at least she would have been pretty if she'd stop
dying her hair purple or green and wore clothes that flattered her instead of
clunky boots and black pants, dark tunics and earrings that reached her
shoulders. A statement, I suppose, to the world that she was Goth, whatever
that means. Every day, Sally, our director, had her working in a different
section of the library doing dreary jobs like re-shelving books and tapes. I
got the feeling that Carrie was bored and ready to leave. I also got the
feeling that Carrie would be able to communicate with me if I ever got close
enough so she could sense my presence.
My niece,
Dorothy Hawkins, the reference librarian, had heard that the head of programs
and events was moving to California. Dorothy wanted this position. She urged
Sally to give it to her, but Sally refused since Dorothy didn't have the right
credentials. Dorothy didn't take this very well. Now, I love my niece. I have
no children, and Dorothy is my favorite of my sister's three children. But she's
not the easiest person to get along with. Okay, she's downright difficult and
often unpleasant.
I was in
Sally's office when she offered Carrie the position of head of programs and
events, a position Carrie was qualified to accept. When that foolish girl was
about to refuse it, I did something I'd never done before. "Don't be a
fool," I said aloud. "Tell her you'll think it over and give her your
answer tomorrow." Thank goodness Carrie heard me and followed my advice.
She took the job and the rest, as they say, is history.
Carrie proved
to be the perfect person for the job. She got a decent haircut and started
wearing attractive clothes to work. But Dorothy was furious. For the first
time, I was glad that she couldn't see me or hear me, and find out I'd been
instrumental in Carrie's taking the position she wanted so badly. Dorothy began
to do spiteful things—hiding a film, calling presenters to say their programs
had been canceled. Carrie dealt with Dorothy and gave her as good as she got.
Even when Dorothy caused some damage to Carrie's car. That Carrie's one smart cookie.
You can read all about this and a few murders in DEATH OVERDUE.
Months
later, bad things started happening to Dorothy. Her own fault, but I wanted to
protect her reputation. As a result, I wasn't very helpful to Carrie when she
started to investigate the murder because I was afraid that she'd uncover some
nasty truths about my nieces and nephew. And then Carrie discovered that my
death wasn't due to an accident after all. You can read all about it in BURIED
IN THE STACKS.
And now
I must return to the place where I stay when I'm not helping Carrie see to it
that things run smoothly in the Clover Ridge Library, my favorite place in the
world.

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
A fantastic addition to this wonderful cozy series! We are back with Carrie at the library where she is in charge of programs, events, and so very much more. Things are going great when cranky Dorothy has an accident that puts her in the hospital. Forced to visit for both Evelyn and the library Dorothy pretty much attached to her which is bewildering to say the least. Before she can figure out what is going on Dorothy is killed in a car accident that lead them accidental. Evelyn pleads her to investigate which leads to an intriguing set of events with an explosive ending. Overall a n incredible cozy filled with easy to relate to characters set in a town that feels like home centered on its adorable library. A must read for fans of copies and libraries. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
