Minestrone Mischief:

A Culinary Cozy (The Italian Kitchen Mysteries)

by Rosie Genova

When a Halloween stalker shows up on Mischief Night, Vic encounters lots of tricks, no treats, and one murder …

It’s the post-summer season in Oceanside Park, and mystery writer Victoria Rienzi’s hometown is preparing for one last blast on the boardwalk—its annual Mischief Night parade, held the evening before Halloween. While Nonna keeps her busy making treat bags full of Italian candy, Vic dreams up the perfect costumes for herself and Tim: Nick and Nora Charles, the famed detective pair from The Thin Man movies. Completing their look is a canine scamp, Willie, borrowed to play the part of Nora’s pet terrier.

But Victoria’s excitement is dimmed by the presence of a stalker, Edward Millman, who’s seen lurking around the Rienzi family restaurant. And who shows up at the Mischief Night parade dressed as Victoria’s book sleuth, Bernardo Vitali. But halfway through the parade, Willie sniffs out trouble, leading Vic and Tim on a not-so-merry chase that brings them to a dead body—Victoria’s stalker, Edward Millman. And in a scene straight out of Victoria’s latest book, Millman is found with a knife sticking from his chest, along with a nasty note: You deserved this.

As Vic digs into the details of the victim’s life, she wonders: Is it life imitating art? Or is there a more deadly form of mischief at work this Halloween?

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

What happens when a fan likes an author so much they recreate the murder scene from her book? A hot mess and a framed author comes to mind. Victoria gets to experience that herself as her creepy #1 fan Edward is found dead by her boyfriend and herself. Add in the holiday mischief on top of the investigation and you will find yourself turning the pages while feeling the holiday mood making for a great read. Sure to delight fans of culinary cozy mysteries. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

But if slashed tires are any indication, she’ll need to crack this case before her own aunt gets served something deadly next . . .

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

This series is totally fantastic!!! Robbie runs the cutest store and I really wish I could eat there. Things are heating up in South Lick, Indiana from a heat wave and drama. A big developer has arrived wanting to build a big luxury resort. Well like most places some are for and some are against it with Robbie adamantly opposed. During a day of fun she runs into a lawyer that offers to help fight against the development which makes things look up but he is found dead the next day leaving things up in the air. Robbie of course has to find out what happened in her own way leading us to the thrilling conclusion that leaves you happy and satisfied while still wanting more. Perfect for fans of culinary cozy mysteries. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Crooked Lane Books (July 10, 2018)
Hardcover 296 Pages

The buoyant mood at Bistro Rousseau deflates when Chef Camille’s sister, Renee, turns up dead in the chef’s kitchen, and Mimi Rousseau must tease the real killer out of a mélange of menacing characters.
Crush Week in Nouvelle Vie is a madhouse—in a good way. Tourists pour into town for the pressing of the Napa Valley’s world-renowned grapes and all the town’s businesses get a nice lift, including Bistro and Maison Rousseau. Mimi is raising the ante this year with a Sweet Treats Festival, a wonderland of croissants, cakes, tarts, and soufflés crafted with expert care by the area’s top talents.
Chef Camille’s sister Renee is managing the festival with a cast-iron fist, upsetting everyone, including her sister. Which is bad for Camille when Renee turns up dead in the chef’s kitchen. Mimi is still building her business, so her first course of action is to whip up answers and catch the unsavory perpetrator before Camille takes a dusting and gets burned.

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Warning do not read this book if you even remotely hungry because if you do you will find yourself running to the kitchen to find something to munch on as the story unfolds with them cooking all kinds of good stuff at the bistro. Of course there is also a murder that links directly to Chef C which makes Mimi start asking questions while trying to keep everything running as the bistro and the inn. Add a festival being held on the property and really mix things up a bit. I have to say the characters in these books really draw your attention making you feel like you have known them forever and the town feels like home as well. The cats added a nice touch in between plot twists going well with all the culinary details throughout. Wonderful writing that flows so smoothly you will find yourself on the last page before you know wishing the next book was out already. I highly recommend it to fans of culinary cozy mysteries. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

In the first of a delectable new Southern-set baking cozy series, Sophia Cummings, pastry chef extraordinaire, must craft the perfect cake for an old friend’s wedding while sifting through the suspects in a murder. Bucolic Rumford, Kentucky has glowing fields of bluegrass, a fine selection of bourbons, and now a professional pastry chef. Broken-hearted Sophia Cummings has come home from New York City. She’s not there a minute before she’s charmed into making her high school friend Charlotte’s wedding cake. The kitchen at the Rumford Country Club seems perfect until Chef Emile’s body is discovered, sprawled near the stove, a cast iron skillet on the floor close by. With one look at the shiny, new frying pan, Sophia knows it’s not Emile’s. She offers her knowledge to Sheriff Carter and her talents to Evelyn, the manager, who needs an interim chef. The mood in the country club is grim: Emile’s peppery personality had burned members and staff alike. Sophia wonders which one of them burned him?

Incredible start to a brand new series. We get to follow Sofia as returns home to Kentucky after being cheated on in order to heal. She just happens to get wrap up in a murder  while shes there. I was loving the Southern charm and all the coming she does to distress  herself. It kept making me hungry even while we learned more about the murder. Add some colorful characters and you end up with a cozy mystery that you won't be able to put down. A must read for fans of culinary cozy mysteries. I absolutely loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Dial M for Mousse by Laura Bradford

Dial M for Mousse (Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery #3)

*I received a free copy of this book from Netgalley which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Book three is the amazing Emergency Dessert Squad Mystery series. The dessert delivery business is really picking up for Winnie by this point and they are even asked to make special desserts for a new artists retreat in the area. Winnie takes the time to make a special one for each artist but when she goes to deliver them she instead finds the retreat owner dead on the floor in the middle of the group. She can't help but to get involved though she vows to stay out of it and her eclectic group of neighbors helps her along the way. This book is the perfect blend of mystery, comedy, romance, intrigue, and so much more that will keep the reader hooked until the very last page. This is a must read read culinary cozy mystery series. I loved every single page so I give it 5/5 stars.

Tastes Like Murder by Catherine Bruns

Tastes Like Murder (Cookies & Chance Mystery #1)

Book one in the Cookies & Chance Mystery series. This book was a hoot. Sally is in the middle of a wacky divorce where hubby found him a younger new wife. After being a house wife for years Sally opens a cookie shop with her divorce settlement and tries to move on with her life. This would be a whole lot easier if the new mistress wasn't found dead on her porch. Of course she has to be the prime suspect. What follows is lots of comical twists and turns that will really keep the reader guessing until the killer is finally revealed. We get some crazy Italian grandmas, a love triangle, and lots of drama all on top of the murder that creates quite a story I have to say. I highly recommend this book to culinary cozy mystery fans. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Things are stressed when she arrives thanks to her behavior and it just gets worse when she is found dead with Jenna as one of the prime suspects. Well of course she has to clear her name and it was quite fun to follow her along on her adventures as she tires to discover the truth of what really happened. This author has a smooth writing style that will really suck you into the story until you find yourself unable to put it down until you know who did it. I highly recommend it to fans of culinary cozy mysteries and give it 4/5 stars since I enjoyed it so much.

This is a very well written cozy mystery that will keep the reader hooked as they follow Vangie's adventure using her unconventional means. I highly recommend the book/series. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Tex-Mex waitress and part-time reporter Josie Callahan serves up more Lone Star justice in this spicy mystery from the author of The Good, the Bad, and the Guacamole.
It's fiesta time in Broken Boot, Texas, and tourists are pouring into town faster than free beer at a bull roping for the mouthwatering Cinco de Mayo festivities. Tex-Mex waitress Josie Callahan, her feisty abuela, and even her spunky Chihuahua Lenny are polishing their folklórico dances for Saturday's big parade, while Uncle Eddie is adding his own spicy event to the fiesta menu: Broken Boot's First Annual Charity Chili Cook-off.
But Uncle Eddie's hopes of impressing the town council go up in smoke when cantankerous chili cook Lucky Straw is found dead in his tent. And when Josie's beloved uncle is accused of fatal negligence, she, Lenny, and the steadfast Detective Lightfoot must uncover who ended the ambitious chilihead's life--before another cook kicks the bucket.

About the Author

Rebecca Adler grew up on the sugar beaches of the Florida Gulf Coast. Drawn to the Big Apple by the sweet smell of wishful thinking, she studied acting on Broadway until a dark-eyed cowboy flung her over his saddle and hightailed it to the Southwest.
Prior to writing women's fiction, Gina always found a way to add a touch of the dramatic to her life: dinner theatre in Mississippi, can-can club in Florida, and playing a giant Furskin in the New York Toy Fair, plus the occasional play and musical. She's currently content to pour her melodramatic tendencies into writing her Taste of Texas culinary mystery series. Set in far West Texas, her humorous stories are filled with delicious suspense and scrumptious Tex-Mex recipes. Her alter ego, Gina Lee Nelson, writes sweet contemporary romances with a sweet, Southern-fried flavor.

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

What a great addition to the cute series. This time we get to follow Josie as they host a huge chili cook-off competition. Being a dead body magnet of course she has to stumble across one while checking the set-ups before it all got started. The story that comes after is nice mystery that gives us lots of little clues while still keeping us entertained with crazy characters like grandma and  Lenny. I enjoy the Texas flair and touch while all the food talk just makes me hungry. If you enjoy a good cozy mystery that features an adorable dog and a culinary touch then this is the book/series for you. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Vangie Vale and the Murdered Macaron by R.L. Syme

Vangie Vale and the Murdered Macaron (The Matchbaker Mysteries #1)

Book one in the Matchbaker Mystery series. What a cute concept for a bakery. The owner had the ability to "match" the customer with the best treat for them and she is really good at it. As if that is not enough for her to do she is also a part-time pastor that has to keep her nose clean after getting into a speck of trouble at her previous church. The combination of the two careers makes for an interesting investigation after a murder victim is found with one of her macaroons making her a suspect. She gets nervous about the bigwigs back home finding out so she looks into things all while trying to avoid the cranky sheriff from next door. Overall I think this is a really good cozy mystery that has a smooth flow to it while still keeping the reader hooked wondering what is going to happen next. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

When the Grits Hit the Fan by Maddie Day

When the Grits Hit the Fan (Country Store Mysteries, #3)

Book three in the Country Store Mystery series. Robbie is still running her really cute store only now she is hosting dinners for the IU Sociology department. Intellectuals can have some heated debates and this group is no exception. Two of them got into a really loud argument which was bad enough but the next day Robbie finds one of them frozen under the ice while she is out snowshoeing with a fiend. I am still loving the Hoosier mannerisms that Maddie captures making me feel right at home. The characters are all easy to get attached to and the murder had me wondering what really happened. If you enjoy a great culinary cozy mystery then you should really give this book/series a try I doubt you will regret it. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Cold Blooded Brew by Tonya Kappes

Cold Blooded Brew

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Book four in the Killer Coffee series that I swear is just getting even better as it continues. This time Roxy is gearing up to help with a big wedding that is supposed to be happening in town. It was going smoothly until the maid-of-honor goes nuts trying to take over making it more her day then the brides. the two of them get into a huge public fight right in the middle of the coffee shop with the crazy one storming out. That would have been the end of it but Roxy finds her dead body outside the shop really early the next morning. One of the main suspects asks her to act as their lawyer so she starts looking into things. She is becoming quite good a bribing people with her goodies to get answers and this point which makes the story even more fun. I enjoy the evolving relationship with the Sheriff is showed some good character growth. Overall this is a well written cozy mystery novels that is just full of life and personality. I highly recommend the whole series to fans of the genre. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Freshly Ground Murder by Tonya Kappes

Freshly Ground Murder (A Killer Coffee Mystery Book 3)

Book three in the Killer Coffee series. Welcome back to Honey Springs, Kentucky the most adorable small town on the lake. Roxy still runs her coffee shop right in the middle of the boardwalk and now it is Christmas time. Things are going great until the town tree lighting reveals a dead body tucked under the bottom of it. This must have really ruined the mood for the night I have to say. Not being able to help herself Roxy starts looking into things and man does she uncover some really good dirt that I did not see coming. This was a fascinating read that really kept me guessing trying to figure how who really did do it. I think it is the little details that Tonya puts in her books that really make them stand out with one being no exception. If you enjoy a good cozy mystery that a culinary flair to it then you really have to give this one a shot or I suggest the whole series to be honest. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Book two in the Killer Coffee series. These are just the cutest books I have to say. Having the whole boardwalk idea on a lake in a small town in Kentucky is just brilliant. Having the coffee shop right in the middle is just pure genius as I swear it helps Roxy when she investigates because she is always in the middle of everything whether she is at work or not. This time she stumbles across a friend of her standing above the dead body of local farmer. the two had been fighting over an expensive chicken her adopted from her shelter which did not help with her prime suspect status. Roxy stumbles across all sort of clues and little tidbits as she moves across town. The blend of the characters, the setting, and the mystery itself just combine to create a really nice cozy mystery novel that I found highly enjoyable. I can also say that I was happy that Roxy is prolonging the wedding date in order to give them some time. I like that after how quick she said yes after moving back to town. if you enjoy cozy mystery novels where the main character runs a shop (she also bakes a lot I must say it makes me hungry) then you really have to give this series a try. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Murder As Sticky As Jam by Diana Orgain

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Murder as Sticky as Jam (A Gluten Free Mystery, #1)Book one in the brand new Gluten Free Mystery series and what a solid start it is. Meet Mona as she gears up to open her new shop Jammin’ Honey with her best friend Vicki. Things are going great leading up to the grand opening until a fire breaks out in the kitchen of the shop essentially eliminating their plans to open. A remodel will be more in order but that may not happen either as Mona is accused of being the arsonist in an effort to get the insurance money. As if all of that is not bad enough a dead body is found in the rubble with the gossip mill claiming that Mona was having an affair with the man even though he was married. What follows is a twisting turning story as Mona just about goes wonky trying to clear her name and finds herself in danger instead. Overall this is a great start to this series that has lots of gluten free details worked in while still keeping the readers focus on the murder. Strong writing, an interesting main character, and a shop idea that I was finding fascinating. If you enjoy culinary cozy mysteries you should really give this one a try. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars. I look forward to the next installment.

Cozy Mystery 3rd in Series
Setting - Montana

You could call it the straw that broke the camel’s back but it was more like a Montana forest timber. Just when Vangie Vale’s life was getting back to normal after a murder that rocked her little Rocky Mountain tourist town, she found herself in the middle of another murder... as the chief suspect.
Vangie stood shocked on the side of the curb as the sheriff stretched yellow crime scene tape around the front of her new bakery. Wouldn’t this make a lovely headline in next week’s paper: Local Baker Kills Parishioner With Pudding. Vangie’s road back to good graces as a part-time pastor was bumpy enough already. This would be a roadblock. Can't have that.

 REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Yet another intriguing installment to this captivating series. By this point the main character Vangie is firmly established and I am quite hooked on her antics I must say. The combination of her being a part time pastor and full time baker makes for some interesting twists to this story that are nice keeping the reader wondering what will happen next. She tried to not get involved in the murder investigation this time but since her food was involved it is impossible. The killer caught me by surprise which is always nice. This is a must read for fans of cozy mysteries with a culinary twist and more. I really enjoyed it so I give it 4/5 stars.
