From Illinois to South Carolina: Or how a Suburban Girl
Ended up in the Middle of Nowhere
Thank you for hosting me today and for allowing me to write
this celebration of the second book in my Witch Cat Mystery series, Dark Corner.
The first book was set in the Blue Ridge Mountains around and outside
Asheville, North Carolina. While researching that book, my husband and I fell
in love with the area and decided it was time to leave our Illinois roots
behind, not to mention the ever-increasing taxes and traffic.
For a year we searched for a home with a mountain view but
also a yard for our two Australian puppies, Atticus and Tracker, who makes an
appearance in the book. When we couldn’t find exactly what we were looking for,
we ended up buying a lot in a gated community. We were going to build our dream
home.
That didn’t quite turn out the way we dreamed it. Due to
wording in the homeowner’s association bylaws, our house went from a 1,800
square foot single story to a 2,400 two-story – much more than the modest
retirement home we pictured. And then there were the silly questions – the bit
of copper overhang over the front door was too shiny, we needed more stone in
front and a tree by the street so passerbys could stop and have some shade.
We debated what to do and went back to looking at existing
homes. My husband expanded our search, still keeping near Asheville, and we
found our almost perfect home, just over the border in South Carolina. The home
sits on a mountain ridge and has an amazing view of Glassy and Hogback
Mountains, part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. And it has almost an acre of
nearly level land in the backyard for the dogs. My office looks out over the
mountains, and I feel a sense of peace as I watch the everchanging landscape.
We loaded up the car on a January day with the two cats,
Terra and Pixel, and dogs and headed from Illinois to South Carolina, braving a
blizzard in Indiana, slush in Kentucky and ice over the Smoky Mountain Pass. In
the end, it has been worth it.
I’ve enjoyed exploring my new area and learning the history.
The nearby Poinsett Bridge plays an important role in Dark Corner, which is
named after the area where we now live. Dark Corner so called because deserters
hid out in the hills and later moonshiners hid here from the revenuers. I was
told that a few years back I would have been shot for driving through here.
Luckily it is not those days and I can enjoy the view and the area.
I do miss the convenience of shopping and pizza delivery or just
Chicago pizza in general but overall, it’s been a great start to a great
adventure. I now consider myself almost a southerner.

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
Just as adorable and captivating as book one! I am enjoying reading from the viewpoint of a cat even if she is supposed to be human. It makes for a unique perspective. Add in New witches of all ages and skills plus the dark magic haunting them causing murders to get a wonderful cozy. The mix of all the cultures is another bonus that makes this great for all sorts of fans. I totally loved it I give it 5/5 stars.
