Book one in the Hayley Powell Food and Cocktails Mystery series. Hayley is a single mom of two kids that runs the local newspaper office. When the current writer of the food and wine column retires she steps up to take her place in an effort to earn a little bit more money to make ends meet because we all know how tough that can be with only one income rolling into the household. She does really well with her column and it leads to rivalry with the writer of the similar column in the second local newspaper. Things are heating up quite nicely between the two women when the competition is suddenly found dead by Hayley herself. Things only get worse when the murder weapon was found in her purse as well. Of course she is arrested and finds herself having to investigate in order to clear her own name which is more complicated because the police chief just happens to be the boyfriend/spouse of her brother (not sure which one to call him because both are stated in the book itself which led me to think that maybe it would official if it was legally allowed at that time though I do not really know that). The character interactions in this story are just great making me laugh, smile, or just plan shake my head over and over again. Hayley is constantly doing stuff she shouldn't but that does not seem to stop her one bit. I especially enjoyed how each of her columns appeared at the end of some of the chapters so we could read it too plus the recipes were also there if I chose to copy them down. Overall this was a really cute cozy mystery and I highly recommend it to fans of series that are focused a lot on food which is not a bad thing. I really enjoyed it so it gets 4/5 stars.
