Book Blitz & Giveaway for Rumpled Rhett by Rachel Rossano

Rumpled Rhett
Rachel Rossano
(Once Upon a Duchy, #3)
Publication date: August 31st 2021
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Romance

Rhett is a Huntsman, skilled, secretive, and mysterious. A wanted man, he spends his life on the move. His sole retreat is the outskirts of an isolated village in the northern reaches of the duchies. Then one fall, he arrives to find his hovel burned to the ground and the village reeve offering a new arrangement.

Catherine knows her father, the village miller, only cares about what she can bring him. The latest scheme of marrying her to the Huntsman is not the miller’s first attempt to sell her. Cat’s dread wanes when she meets the Huntsman. There is something honorable about him, and he treats her with respect, unlike her father or brother. Perhaps she can escape her father’s influence forever.

Despite his suspicions, Rhett agrees to the deal and frees Cat from her father’s tyranny, at least for a time. But can he protect her when enemies from his past catch up to him?

Inspired by Rumpelstiltskin.

EXCERPT:

Rhett

“Ah, the nomad returns!” Duggan raised a half-filled beer mug to take a swig. A rotund man, the reeve’s belly sagged over his belt as he got to his feet.

The few other patrons warily quaffed the last of their drinks and made their way to the door. All of them avoided even glancing my way. I didn’t care. I had business with the man before me, not them.

“My house burned down.” Crossing my arms over my chest, I narrowed my gaze on Duggan’s flushed features.

“It went up in flames one night.” Duggan huffed out a dramatic sigh before draining the last of his beer. “We tried to stop the blaze, but—” He shrugged one of his plump shoulders beneath his fur-lined robe.

“We had an agreement. I protect the village, and in exchange, I get land and its tending while I am away.” I let the facts and my glowering silence sink through his thick skull.

He owed me. The village owed me. My reputation as the Huntsman kept most thieves and bandits from targeting the community. Only the foolish and foolhardy occasionally attempted to harass me, but I swiftly enlightened them.

In return, I had requested only two things. I wished to live at peace for a few months every winter, and I needed someone to guard my shelter when I was gone the rest of the year.

“We tried to save it,” he protested mildly.

“And didn’t bother to rebuild it,” I pointed out. Frost-tipped grass had peeked through the ash heaps. Months had passed since the fire by the looks of things.

“We considered it.” His voice was even and calm, but he continued to avoid looking at me. “But we needed the wood to expand the mill and—”

“The tavern.”

“We had none left to rebuild your house as well. So, we decided to work out a better situation.”

I let my silence speak for me. I had been content with my situation. It suited me well.

True, I hadn’t been particularly fond of the hovel I had been allotted, but it had been enough. I valued its attributes: warmth, isolation on the edge of the village, and comfort enough for my winterly retreat from my reputation.

“Come, let me show you.” He motioned toward the square outside.

“No.” He had planned this for all I knew, and the village’s enforcers awaited me beyond the expensive new tavern windows. “First, you explain.”

Duggan pursed his mouth like a spoiled child who had just been reprimanded by his mother.

“Explain.”

“We all discussed it…asked ourselves what a man needs…decided there were a few ways to improve things…”

I cleared my throat.

“So, we took it upon ourselves to—”

“The point?” My voice lowered and warned of my waning patience.

“We have chosen to give you land, a house, and a wife.” Duggan turned and banged his mug on the bar top. “Another!” he bellowed.

“A wife?” I stared at him in complete confusion. “How did you come to the conclusion that I needed a wife?”

“A house without a wife is empty.”

Exactly how I like it, I thought. But Duggan continued.

“She can cook for you, clean for you, and fill the house with comforts that make it a home. There is nothing like coming home to a warm meal on the table, hot mulled wine in one’s cup, and the pleasures of a woman’s company to keep one content.”

The image in my head was much less appealing—chatter, demands for expensive accouterments, expectations of me being home on time, and…children. My mind caught on the last thought. I did need children to carry on my family name and the traditions of the huntsman. Distant memories of my mother’s stories impressing upon me the importance of my father’s lineage and the bloodline I carried pressed in on me. Shaking free from their hold, I grimaced. That didn’t mean I had to do it now or even ever.

“Don’t discount it until you have tried it, Huntsman. A woman’s touch is what you need.”

“No. I need a secure place to rest.”

Duggan shouted his approval. “A house, a wife, some land, it is about time you settled down.”

“I have no intention of…”

Duggan was already out the tavern door and yelling to someone across the village square. “Master Billier! The Huntsman has returned. Bring your daughter to the meeting house.”

My lip curled of its own accord. Billier was the town miller, and fat, thanks to his position running the only mill for miles around. That didn’t stop the man from being despicable. I avoided him when I could and wrestled my temper and conscience every time I couldn’t. I wanted nothing to do with any scheme in which he was involved. Last year he had claimed that his daughter could spin straw into gold in an effort to sell her off to a traveling nobleman. I wouldn’t entrust any living thing into his care, not even a cat, and I cherished no love for the furry creatures, thanks to their effect on my eyes and nose.

Duggan beckoned from outside. “Come, Huntsman. Billier fetches his daughter to the meeting house. She’s as fair and biddable a lass as any other.”

A woman was far less deserving of Billier’s care than a cat. I decided to allow the farce to continue a bit longer, the better to understand their intentions. Surreptitiously checking my access to my weapons, I followed the reeve in the direction of the dark meeting hall.

As Duggan rushed about lighting a fire in the hearth and a few of the lanterns against the walls, I staked out the corner farthest from the door. The reeve had only lit the corner nearest the door before it opened to admit the greasy-haired miller and his daughter.

She was small. Petite and barely a handful of feet high, she could fit beneath one of my arms, and I could carry her off without much effort. Not that I would. However, there was a dignity, a solidness to her tiny frame that made her father keep his distance despite his evident eagerness to sell her assets.

“She cooks, cleans, and keeps house well enough for a girl. Has a fair enough figure, so I am told. Come on, girl, show off your wares.” Billier shoved his daughter forward so that she stumbled.

Only a brief glare in her father’s direction betrayed her anger. Still, she obeyed. Back straight and shoulders tight, she walked with confidence despite a slight limp. Perhaps she had an injured hip, knee…no. I watched for a few more steps. Something was wrong with her foot, and walking on it pained her, causing a slight hitch in her breathing. Her betrayal of the weakness was so minute that I had almost missed it.

My attention swung to her father. Had he injured her? It would fit his malicious personality. What he could not bully, he humiliated. One look at his daughter’s tightly wound body, and it was easy to imagine him pressuring her to do something solely for his benefit. But what was he getting out of her marrying me?

“Leave,” I demanded.

“What? If she doesn’t please you—” Billier sputtered.

“You two.” I jerked my chin at the two men. “Leave.”

“Come.” Duggan caught Billier’s arm. “Best let him talk to her.”

Billier’s glare at his daughter intensified as the reeve guided him toward the door outside. “You mess this up, girl, and—” Whatever he intended went unsaid as Duggan closed the door behind the two of them with a sharp tug.

The girl relaxed infinitesimally. However, she also eyed me warily and oriented herself to duck behind a table should I become more clearly dangerous.

“What is your name?” I asked. I hadn’t seen her about the village before, but then I rarely spent any time in the village.

“Catherine, but everyone calls me Cat.”

I laughed. It came out as a rusty sound, as though I didn’t do it often, which I didn’t.

Her eyes narrowed. “My name isn’t funny.”

“No, but the irony is.” Then I realized by her blank expression that I would need to explain. “Cats make me sick, the four-legged variety that is.”

She didn’t smile. Instead, she simply nodded. “Then it is good I am not that kind of cat.”

“It is.”

Silence descended between us. Faintly through the door behind her, we could hear her father raging. My concern for Cat’s safety grew. I didn’t think Billier was capable of murder, but one never could tell by looking at a person. Also, accidental murders happened, like beating someone to death in a fit of rage.

Wolves At the Door by Lidiya Foxglove

Wolves at the Door by Lidiya Foxglove

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Helena has moved on to the second house needed to find the missing map pieces. This one is a challenge because she is not the only one trying to by it. Her Rival Billie (another witch) tops her when it comes to the selling price. At first Hel was upset but then Billie learns she needs her help when the house is so much more then she bargained for. This is a fabulous addition to this wonderful series. Has lots of surprise twists that forces them all to work together in ways they never thought possible. A truly wonderful read that you will not want to put down. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

Blog Tour, Guest Post, Review, & Giveaway for A Sprinkling of Murder by Daryl Wood Gerber

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH FOOD
“Life is good; reading makes it better.” ~ Daryl Wood Gerber

When you think of a cozy mystery, do you think food? No, not necessarily. You might think books, libraries, or knitting. You might think of mental mysteries featuring Hercole Poirot or Perry Mason. You might think of fun mysteries, like the antics of Nancy Drew. But how about all those delicious, swoon-inducing recipes included in books by Joanna Carl and Dianne Mott Davidson? How about tasty cozies by Krista Davis and Ginger Bolton and Lucy Burdette?
That is why I titled this piece, My Love Affair with Food. I think food is sexy. It has sensual textures, aromatic scents, and luscious flavors. Food tastes good with coffee, soda, beer, wine, and champagne. The wonderful thing about reading about delicious food is you can fantasize and imagine and never gain a pound.

You might guess by now that I write about food in my cozy mysteries. I’m always thinking about food, about recipes, about what will make my readers salivate. I’ve tasted, I’ve baked, and I’ve shared. And yes, there is food in all my cozy mysteries, even in A SPRINKLING OF MURDER, the 1st Fairy Garden Mystery.  Why is there food in a story about a woman who owns a fairy garden shop called Open Your Imagination in Carmel, California? Because Courtney Kelly’s shop serves tea on the weekends—tea with cookies and scones and cupcakes. Sometimes the tea is for a book club. And, spoiler alert, Courtney might fall for a hunky café owner who creates incredible food.  We’ll have to see.

So, answer me this. What is the most delicious meal you can remember…ever?  And if you’d like to share, with whom did you dine?

Since childhood, Courtney has loved fairies. After her mother died when she was ten, she lost touch with that feeling of magic. A year ago, at age twenty-nine, she rediscovered it when she left her father's landscaping business to spread her wings and start a fairy garden business and teashop in beautiful Carmel, California. At Open Your Imagination, she teaches garden design and sells everything from fairy figurines to tinkling wind chimes and trickling fountains. Now she's starting a book club tea.

But the light of the magical world she's created inside her shop is darkened one night when she discovers neighboring dog-grooming business owner Mick Watkins dead beside a fountain. To make matters worse, the police suspect Courtney of the crime. To clear her name and find the real killer, Courtney will have to wing it. But she’s about to get a little help from an unexpected new friend . . .
 REVIEW
This book is just too adorable!!! We meet Courtney who runs a fairy garden tea shop. She carries all the items needed to make your own fairy garden as well as teaching you how to do it. Help comes in the form of a real fairy who is on probation having to do good deeds to be able to go home. They make a fantastic duo and when you add in Pixie the cat it just gets better. Things are going great I til the owner of the dog grooming shop is found in her shops courtyard making her a suspect. Worried for her business she starts investigating with a little help only to find more then bargained for. Makes for a well written cozy full of characters you can both love and hate. The touch of magic gives it just the right flair to really pull the story together making for a read you won't want to put down. A must read for fans of cozies and/or fairies. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

River Marked by Patricia Briggs

River Marked by Patricia Briggs

Mercy is always so much fun to read about and this installment is no exception. Under family pressure she decides to elope with Adam only to get a surprise wedding instead. It is really sweet with the set-up fitting the  characters so well. This kicks off their honeymoon which they are spending at an empty campground owned by fae friends in a brand new fancy camper. After some initial uneasiness about the fae part Mercy embraces it and they proceed to have fun until they run across a man injured in his boat stranded in the river. When Mercy goes to help him she is attacked on her leg by something which leaves a weird wound behind. What follows is quite the mystery for the two of them leading to an explosive showdown in the end which leaves Mercy quite damages. A gripping read that you won't want to put down that gives us some fantastic insight into Mercy herself. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Excerpt:

“We have to go back for Lucas. Take me back, now.” I grabbed at Gage’s sweater, tears streaming down my face.
“Breathe, little witch.” He pulled me into his chest. “Breathe.”
“But he… the vampires…”
“Lucas will be fine.” His hand cupped the back of my head.
“He will?” I eased out of his grip, craning my neck to see his eyes. Needing to see honesty there.
“I promise.”
“What was that back there?” It had been a blur, but I’d seen the burst of power. Felt it before Gage got us out of there.
“That was Fae magic. The Riverbank is protected by wards, protection spells. They keep unwanted visitors out.”
“I didn’t know.” I was beginning to realize I didn’t know a lot of things.
“You didn’t exactly come with an instruction manual, Celeste. And we didn’t want to overwhelm you. Telling you about the wards didn’t seem important at the time.”
“Lucas will really be okay?”
Gage backed up, giving me space, and ran a hand down his face. “He’ll be fine. If he needed help, he would have called for it. But there is none more powerful than Lucas.”
My shoulders sagged with relief.
“You really care about him, don’t you?” Gage asked tightly.
“I… I can’t explain it. It’s like you came along and all I saw was you. My heart became yours. But then spending time with Lucas, a small part became his too.”
He inhaled a ragged breath and looked to the sky. I went to him, hating the distance between us. Sliding my hands up his chest, I looped my arms around his neck and demanded his attention. “It doesn’t change how I feel about you, Gage.”
“Sharing is not in my nature, little witch.” He smoothed his thumb down my cheek and over my bottom lip. “When I think of you with another, I want to—”
“Ssh.” I silenced him with a kiss. “I’m not asking you to share.”
At least, I didn’t think I was.
Lucas and I were more friends. It wasn’t explosive and passionate the way it was with me and Gage, but I had felt something with him earlier. Gage broke the kiss, staring down at me. Slowly his mask of composure slid back into place and I knew this conversation was over.
For now.
“We should get moving. Once you’re settled with the wolves, I’ll make sure Lucas is okay and then pay Gerard another visit. Dahlia needs to be taken care of once and for all.”
“You’re not leaving me here!” I shrieked.
“It’s just until things with Dahlia calm down. She won’t stop, Celeste. Not until she has what she wants.”
“And what does she want Gage? Me… or you?”
He blew out an exasperated breath, rubbing his temples. “Come on. The sentries have picked up our scents.” Gage set off toward the bayou. Last time we’d been here, we came in through the main street, but this time we were already deep in wolf territory.
We hadn’t gotten twenty feet when Jaxon Gallant burst out of the trees. “Bloodsucker, these visits are becoming a far too regular occurrence.”
“Is Laken around?”
“He’s out at his cabin. What’s this all about?” Jaxon moved into Gage’s space and the air around us charged with tension.
Fed up with being surrounded by men who insisted on treating me like nothing more than a damsel in distress, I stomped past them both and called, “While the two of you figure out whose dick is bigger, I’m going to find Laken.”
Jaxon snickered while Gage rushed up beside me. “We were not—”
“Save it. I’m hungry, tired, and I don’t have the energy to argue with you.”
He stepped in front of me, cutting off my route. “Why didn’t you say something?”
I met Gage’s concerned gaze and grimaced. “I’m fine. Come on, let’s get this over with.”
“It must be bad if you’re running here.” Jaxon fell into step on my other side.
“It’s—”
“Celeste.” Gage’s voice was grave. “We should wait until we speak with Laken.”
“My brother doesn’t keep things from me.” The younger Gallant puffed out his chest.
Gage raised a brow at that. Thankfully, the dense trees began to clear, and I spotted Laken’s cabin in the distance. He was out front, shirtless, chopping wood. As we drew nearer, I could make out the ripple of his muscles as he swung the axe down, splitting the huge logs clean in half.
“You’ve got a little drool,” Jaxon mocked. “Right there.” He reached for me, but I batted his hand away, feeling my cheeks heat.
Gage growled beside me and when I slid my guilty eyes to his, I said, “I can’t help it. He’s right there and he’s half-naked. I’d be crazy not to notice all that.” I waved my hand in Laken’s direction.
I was playing—for the most part—but it didn’t stop my jealous vampire from stalking off ahead of me.
“Think you pissed him off.” Jaxon didn’t bother trying to tamp down the amusement in his voice.
“He’ll get over it,” I said, feeling smug to have Gage at my mercy for once.
By the time we reached Gage and Laken, they hadn’t killed each other. I took that as a positive sign.
“Look what the wolf dragged in.” Jaxon slung his arm around my neck. “Get it? Wolf?” He howled with laughter, but his brother and Gage looked anything but amused.
“Jaxon,” Laken barked. “Please remove your arm from the Regent’s neck.”
Not Celeste.
Not even girl.
Just the Regent.
I bristled.
