Read and Gone:

A Haunted Library Mystery

by Allison Brook

Character Interview

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself--both something we learn from [the story] and something that readers might not guess? I'm thirty years old—the librarian in charge of programs and events at the Clover Ridge Library in Clover Ridge, CT. I've had a somewhat unusual childhood because my father, Jim Singleton, is a professional thief and spent some time in prison. His so-called career has embarrassed me all these years. At the same time, I've missed my dad. In READ AND GONE, Jim shows up after years of being away with an unusual proposal—would I contact the local jeweler, his partner in a heist, and set up a meeting so he can retrieve his half of the stolen jewels?  Of course I say no. I'm a law biding citizen. But when the jeweler's found murdered and my father's Suspect Number One, I feel obliged to find the real murderer as well as the jewels before he does.
  2.  How did you first meet your writer?  Allison was looking for a new sleuth and setting and thought that my job in the library was a perfect match. She also fell in love with Clover Ridge and the village green, around which many old homes had been built. Some of these are still residences, but others like the library were converted into shops, restaurants, and galleries.
  3. Want to dish about him/her? Allison's a fun kind of author. She has me creating all sorts of fun programs like cooking demonstrations. She also got me a library cat and a really cool boyfriend. I've lots of friends as well. Of course she sometimes drops me into hot water, but I usually manage to extricate myself pretty well.
  4. Why do you think that your life has ended up being in a book? My life is pretty interesting. I mean, how many people do you know can relate to a ghost? On the minus side, my family's dysfunctional with  my father being a thief and my mother being pretentious and married to a would-be actor ten years her junior. Not your usual family.
  5. Who's your favorite character? Why? I'm especially fond of my best friend Angela. She's warm and supportive and tells it like it is.
  6. Who's your least favorite character? Why? I can't stand Dorothy Hawkins. She's nasty and mean-spirited. She's pulled lots of dirty tricks on me because she resents the fact that I got to be head of programs and events and she's still the reference librarian.
  7. What's next for you? The next book in the series. In this book a librarian is murdered and I try to find the killer.

Twenty million dollars’ worth of missing gems bring Carrie Singleton’s long-lost and larcenous dad back into her life and it’s up to Carrie to clear his name.
A devoted dad is as precious as diamonds, but Carrie Singleton wouldn’t know since her dad Jim’s been on the lam most of her life. In an unusual family reunion, she finds Jim breaking into her cottage in the middle of the night. The fun really starts when he begs her to help him recover his half of a twenty-million-dollar gem heist he pulled off with the local jeweler, Benton Parr. When she refuses, Jim takes off again.
Carrie finds her father again behind bars for the recent murder of Benton Parr. Who made the connection? Unbeknownst to her, Carrie’s boyfriend Dylan, an insurance investigator, has been searching for the gems. Determined to find the jewels herself, she starts examining every facet of Parr’s life. She turns up a treasure trove of suspects, one of whom bashes her on the head as she’s searching the victim’s country cabin.
Retreating to the quiet confines of the library where she works, Carrie watches as Smokey Joe, the resident cat, paws at a hole in the wall. Is he after the library’s ghost Evelyn, or something shinier?

REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

Incredibly well written cozy mystery that is an absolute must read for fans of the genre. I was absolutely hooked from page one unable to put it down as the story unfolded. The relatable characters, fabulous setting, and elaborate mystery all combine into this incredible novel with a library theme. The cute kitty is just icing on the cake. I totally love this series so I give it 5/5 stars.
