Character Name: Camelia Collins from the Ghost Cat on the Midway
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself—both something we learn from “Ghost Cat on the Midway” and something that readers might not guess?
Please don’t tell me dreams die when a person gets older. I’m in my seventies and I just fulfilled my lifelong fantasy of moving from a big city to the coast. I am now a happy resident of Ocean Cove, Oregon where my little home Love Cottage looks out upon the vast Pacific Ocean. The air is crisp, the atmosphere gentle, and the people friendly—at least for the most part. There have been a few teeny weenie murders since I arrived a few months ago, but that has nothing to do with me. At least, not much…
2) How did you first meet your writer?
My writer was looking for a new series subject, and since we share a “certain” age, I applied for the job. Little did I know she was going to cast me with a ghost! But I don’t mind, since the ghost is a cat.
3) Want to dish about her?
As I mentioned, cat writer Mollie Hunt is no spring chicken. She wishes she could be more like me—going to parties, out for dinner, and for long walks on the beach. Where she lives, they have had a pandemic and she came down with Long COVID which limits her abilities to exert herself. Mostly she sits in front of her computer writing stories and petting her cats. Not a bad life, though not my cup of tea.
4) Why do you think that your life has ended up being in a book?
I am a role model for those over retirement age who are told by society that their life is essentially over. It’s not true. Life changes with age, but there is still so much to do and see and be.
5) Who's your favorite character? Why?
I have a cat, you see. His name is Blaze and he’s a senior like me. I have to say our long-time bond is immensely meaningful to me. On the other hand, coming to Ocean Cove, I have made lots of new human friends. Ellery Evans is the closest thing I’ve had to a soulmate since Mr. Collins passed away many years ago now. But the quirkiest character of all is Soji the ghost cat who haunts my property and helps me solve crimes. She’s my favorite.
6) Who's your least favorite character? Why?
Why, the villain who murdered my friend Alice, of course. Or maybe it’s the crochety old militant who leads the vigilante activists’ group. He’s a bully.
7) What's next for you?
Right now, my writer is taking a break and working on a different series, her Crazy Cat Lady Cozy Mysteries, with a new book coming out in October. But I already have a clue as to where and when my next adventure will be. A Christmas theme this time, with all sorts of old fashioned small-town fun and a murder. Watch for “Ghost Cat Christmas” sometime next year.
