Character Interview
Character Name: Blueberry
1) Tell us a little bit about yourself--both something we learn from [the story] and something that readers might not guess?
My name is Blueberry. I’m basically the best dog ever. Way better than my brother, Pretzel. In the book, readers learn that my mom, Alara, can communicate with me. She’s a sidekick! Wait, no, she’s a psychic. I’m her sidekick! I go on a pretty crazy adventure with my mom and her friend Rudi in the second book called Tea & Talismans, which is a dumb name for a book. It should be called Blueberry Saves the Day. Anyway, in the book my mom sends me some messages and asks for my help. I don’t want to tell you too much ‘cause I don’t want to ruin it! I’m super excited to be involved more in this book. I keep telling the writer that the book should be all dogs, all the time, but she doesn’t listen to me!
2) How did you first meet your writer?
We met when my mom’s friend died. She told me that Debbie was murdered and that she was going to use her psychic abilities to solve the case. Then this crazy writer came along to document everything my mom was doing and thinking. I told her that she should have written about it from my perspective instead. I’m WAY more interesting. After my mom solved the case, the writer finished the book. She called it Mediums & Murder. Then, when my mom’s cousin came to visit and started getting death threats the writer came back again to write Tea & Talismans.
3) Want to dish about him/her?
She’s pretty cool, I guess. She mostly spies on my mom, follows her around everywhere while eating peanut butter on bagels. Sometimes she slips me some peanut butter, so I guess I like her. I’ve tried bringing her all my best toys to show her how awesome I am. I have like four bones. Who could resist a dog cool enough to have four bones? But she still says the book is about my mom and not me, though she told me I’m my mom’s sidekick, which is pretty awesome. She also gives me good belly rubs before she leaves our house, so I like that. I’m not sure she’s totally sane though. She told me the books she writes are “cozy.” How can a book about murder be cozy? She told me that my mom is pretty funny, our town is small and cute, and that us dogs help make the story cozier. She’s got that last part right, but I still don’t know about murder being cozy. Such a weirdo.
4) Why do you think that your life has ended up being in a book?
Basically, I have the best mom ever. She has superpowers! How amazing is that? She used to hide them from everyone except us dogs, but not anymore. Now she uses her psychic abilities to investigate, which makes her way cooler. Who wouldn’t want to read about a superhero investigator who has the most majestic and glorious dog in the history of dogs?
5) Who's your favorite character? Why?
Myself, obviously, but if I had to choose another character, I would say Rudi Rivera. He’s pretty awesome. He goes on runs with my mom and me and always gives me lots of pets and belly rubs. He’s also a police officer and he saved my mom from a bad guy. She says she saved herself but I don’t believe her. Either way, he has a pretty cool job. And also his parents own a restaurant, so sometimes I get to sneak leftovers from there which makes my belly very happy.
6) Who's your least favorite character? Why?
Well, my least favorite character in Tea & Talismans is the one responsible for the threats against my mom’s cousin. I can’t tell you who that is without spoiling the book! So I guess I’d say my least favorite character is my mom’s uncle, Bertram. He’s super not cool. He hates my mom, which as I said, she’s the best mom ever, so I can’t believe that he would hate her. He doesn’t even really know her. She was adopted and just met her biological family for the first time! He’s basing it all off some stupid prophecy. My mom told me he thinks that the prophecy about her psychic abilities is dangerous for the family. I don’t really understand what it’s about though so if you wanna know more about it you’ll just have to read Mediums & Murder or Tea & Talismans. All I know is that he’s a super rude dude.
7) What's next for you?
I hope there’s a big, juicy steak in my future. I also plan on taking a lot of naps and using my own superpower, which is to look super cute so I get all the treats. And, of course, I’ll be helping my mom with future psychic investigations. She needs me. I don’t know what she’d do without me! I hear there’s a case coming up involving a very large cactus…
