Character Interview – With Pippin Lane Hawthorn
1)
Tell us a little bit about yourself--both
something we learn from [the story] and something that readers might not
guess?
The things
I’d like to share are related. In Murder in Devil’s Cove, you learn that I have
never been a big reader, yet my family’s gift of bibliomancy literally centers
around books. Readers might not guess that Grey (my twin brother), on the other
hand, is a huge reader. He gravitates toward SciFi and nonfiction. We grew up
not being allowed to be around books. Grey and I both tried to sneak books into
our rooms to read. He got better and better at reading, but it was so hard for
me that I gave up.
2) How did you first meet your writer?
I first met Melissa when she was in
Colorado visiting her daughter, Sophia. Sophia’s roommate, Kati, has the middle
name of Pippin. Melissa loved the name, but more than that, she loved that
Kati’s parents gave her this middle name because of their love of Tolkien. That
inspired Melissa to create Leo Hawthorn, a diehard Tolkien fan, and from there,
I was born.
Hmm, I don’t want to say too much
because I want good storylines in my next books. No death scenes for me! Of
course, I’m the main character, so she can’t really kick me off, can she?
Seriously, though, I like her. She’s
pretty laidback, she really gets me, and I’m pretty excited that I’m
going to get to learn how to read better, and I get to really use my gift of
bibliomancy.
I’m curious about Jamie McAdams, too,
and his daughters, Heidi and Mathilda. ;)
4) Why
do you think that your life has ended up being in a book?
That’s an interesting question. I think
that bibliomancy is not understood or even known about. It was new to me. Being
able to share this gift—or curse, depending on how you look at it—through the
Book Magic books is pretty cool. The stories within the stories need to be
told.
5)
Who's your favorite character? Why?
I must say
that I’m so curious about Hattie Juniper Pickle. Just her name makes me smile,
and once you meet her, you’ll see why she’s an awesome neighbor.
6)
Who's your least favorite character? Why?
I can’t
reveal that to you right now, because doing so would ruin the story Melissa has
woven. I’ll leave it at: the person who killed my father.
7)
What's next for you?
We’ll be
doing a grand opening/open house for Sea Captain’s Inn soon. Great and I are
finishing up the small details of the renovation, then I’ll start planning for
the event. After that, a well-known archeologist will be staying as one of the
Inn’s first guests. I hope you’ll stop by the grand opening!

Two best-selling authors, one magical universe.
In the Book Magic Mystery Series, best-selling authors Melissa Bourbon and Wendy Lyn Watson bring you the story of cousins Pippin Lane Hawthorne and Cora Lane. The cousins live on opposite coasts (Pippin in Devil’s Cove, North Carolina, and Cora in Laurel Point, Oregon), but they share the family gift of bibliomancy: the ability to foresee the future and unravel the past with the help of the books we love. Join Pippin and Cora as they use their otherworldly power to solve mysteries in their respective worlds.
__________________________________________Every book tells two stories—one written on the pages with pen and ink, and one woven into the paper, a story of the soul. The Lane women have the gift of bibliomancy. They can read both.
But Cassie Lane doesn’t see this as a gift. For her, it is a curse because the book magic comes with a price--the Lane women die young and the men are lost to the sea. As soon as she’s able, she leaves Laurel Point, Oregon, running from her past and her fate, ending up in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There she meets Leo Hawthorne and lives a perfect life with him in an old Sea Captain’s house.
Perfect, that is, until an old book foretells the future, and the curse that has plagued the Lane women comes true for Cassie.
Twenty years later, Cassie and Leo's children, twins Pippin and Grey, are back in Devil's Cove. Long forgotten secrets surface and an old crime comes to light. Now Pippin must learn how to be a bibliomancer if she is to discover the truth about her father and continue his effort to stop the curse.
REVIEW
*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.
This book totally sucked me in as the story tells the past as well as the present. When the twins inherit the family house they had no clue what secrets that would expose as well as the family magic and curse to go along with it. Following along as it all plays out really brings the character terms to life with a subtle under layer at the same. Makes for a truly magical read for fans of cozies with a slight magical flair. I totally loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.
